BDU’s inauguration as reported in Addis Zemen newspaper
Bahir Dar University was inaugurated on Miazia 29, 1992 E.C. by fusing the former Poly Technic Institute (1955 E.C) and Bahir Dar Teachers College (1965 E.C). President Negasso Gidadda had laid the corner stone in the presence of Minster of Education, Genet Zewudie; ANRS President, Ato Addisu Legesse; university’s interim President, Dr. Shimelis Haile and other dignitaries.
In the same year, Mekelle and Debub universities were inducted. Mekelle university came out from two institutes: Mekelle Hintsete Zinab Agricultural College and Mekelle Business College whereas Debub university resulted from a merger of Hawassa Agricultural College, Hawassa Teachers College, Dilla Health Institute and Arbaminch Water Technology Institute. Debub University later grew to 3 separate universities, namely Hawassa, Dilla and Arbaminch universities. A year before, in 1991 E.C, Jimma became a university merging the former Jimma Agricultural College and Jimma Health Science Institute.
